Standing alone in the middle of the living room where only a hollow breeze flowed, Nathaniel had been chewing over his thoughts when a sudden realization sent him rushing toward the study. It was within his expectations that Chrissy might ransack the house, and consequently, find the key to the study. He had to leave a few crumbs for the man to follow, otherwise, he would simply give up.
But he shouldn’t have been able to find the decisive piece of information.
It was only natural. Even if Chrissy Jin happened to be a computer genius and cracked the password, it would be impossible. From the start, Nathaniel Miller trusted no one and nothing. Because of this, he kept all critical information stored in his head. It would be absolutely impossible for Chrissy to obtain the information he wanted unless it came directly from Nathaniel’s mouth.
…At least, it should have been.
He hurriedly climbed the stairs, taking them three at a time, but his cane made it difficult.
“Damn it.”
Eventually, Nathaniel threw the cane aside, gripped the railing, and strode up the stairs to the second floor. Even while limping unsightly, he didn’t stop, continuing his pace. Thanks to that, he reached the study in an instant.
Bang! Nathaniel flung the door open and stood there, slowly scanning the room. The study, which was always perfectly organized, was exactly as he remembered it, without a single thing out of place.
Except for one spot.
His keen eyes managed to catch a tiny difference that an ordinary person would never have noticed. The moment he spotted it, he strode forward and pulled out a file.
“Hah.”
A short sigh escaped his lips. As expected, a portion of the file was missing. How had he thought of this? While forced to admit that Chrissy Jin was more competent than expected, Nathaniel immediately sprang into action. If so, the place this man went was obvious. He had to find him right now. If he failed to get his hands on Chrissy in time…
“God damn it.”
Uncharacteristically, a string of curses burst from Nathaniel’s mouth. But he wasn’t aware of it. Only one thought occupied his mind.
He’s going to die.
“Prosecutor! What happened? Are you feeling okay now?”
At the sudden appearance of Chrissy in the office, the assistant prosecutor cried out in surprise, then murmured with a bewildered expression.
“Uh… well… that’s a very… novel fashion choice…”
By struggling to find an expression that wouldn’t be rude, she had already shown more than enough consideration. Indeed, Chrissy currently looked like a mess, as if he had been wrapped in a potato sack. However, Chrissy didn’t have time for trivial explanations.
“It just happened. By the way, how was everything handled while I was absent? Let me tell you now, there were circumstances. I have no intention of quitting as a prosecutor.”
“Of course you don’t.”
The assistant prosecutor replied, still looking dazed.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about… The Chief Prosecutor said you’d be resting for about a week due to the flu. Everyone was worried. Um, are you all recovered from the flu?”
That rotten bastard.
Chrissy cursed inwardly, appalled. Of course. There was no way his resignation had been processed that easily. He felt a surge of anger at the fact that Nathaniel Miller had deceived him once again, but other matters took priority for now.
After Nathaniel left for work, Chrissy had fallen into a brief state of self-loathing. Everything he had done since coming here had been nothing but things that earned that man’s ridicule. And now, he had even suffered these injuries. Even if he were called the biggest idiot and moron in the world, there was no room for excuse.
It was laughable how he had previously acted high and mighty, declaring ‘I won’t sleep with you,’ only to be the one to seduce him first—and even that had failed. Perhaps the very idea of a Beta like himself seducing a trait governed by pheromones to trigger a rut was a delusion from the start. If so, what was left for him to do?
Track him down using clues.
Chrissy steadied his mind and got out of bed. Putting weight on an ankle that was swollen to twice its normal size was incredibly difficult, but not impossible. Gritting his teeth, he moved slowly, found the key, and headed to the study. For a brief moment, he felt he understood how Nathaniel felt while using a cane, but he quickly brushed the thought away. That was that bastard’s own doing; it was none of his business.
…Then again, my current state is also my own doing.
With a bitter sigh, Chrissy opened the door to the study. The room was exactly as it had been when he locked it and left the previous day. As expected, Anthony’s spot was empty. In that case, the next place to look was…
Jonathan Davis.
At the sudden thought of the name, Chrissy immediately reached for the next file. Flipping through the pages hurriedly, he stopped in his tracks.
He’s here, Jonathan Davis…!
Why hadn’t this name come to mind immediately? A sigh escaped him as he realized how narrow his perspective had been. He should have looked for Jonathan the moment he realized Anthony’s file was gone. He had been so preoccupied with thoughts of Anthony that he hadn’t considered any other possibilities.
Get it together, Chrissy Jin.
He shook his head vigorously, like a dog emerging from water, and focused on the documents. Most of it was information he already knew from the trial preparation process. His eyes, scanning down the page, stopped at one spot.
M.C.
Chrissy tilted his head at the words written in bold at the very end. What is this? It looks like an abbreviation…
“M.C. M.C…”
Chrissy kept muttering the same words over and over. Nothing came to mind. After pondering for a moment, he read the file again and again. There must be something I missed. I have to find it, definitely. Jonathan Davis. Son of the President of Davis Pharmaceuticals. Davis Pharmaceuticals, which recently announced a new drug. New drugs circulating on the market that haven’t even been properly verified. The disappeared drug dealer, Bahama. And his relationship with Anthony…
“Ah.”
Suddenly, something flashed through his mind. Looking down at the documents again, his gaze landed on the abbreviation from before.
M.C.
“Moon… Child?”
He suddenly snapped awake. The ‘Son of the Moon’ that Simmons had mentioned. And now, M.C. written in Davis’s documents. This was definitely an abbreviation for ‘Moon Child.’ Could it be that Jonathan Davis was the very person he had been looking for?
It fit too perfectly. He didn’t know why such a nickname was necessary, but it was certain that this was a crucial clue. If so, the next thing to verify was…
Ultimately, Anthony held the key to the entire case. He had to check the case files again. There must be something he missed. Something he hadn’t thought of.
“Agh.”
After carefully returning the file to its place so as not to leave any trace that he had seen it, Chrissy let out a short scream as he turned to leave. He had forgotten about his painful ankle and moved too hastily. However, this was no time to be considerate of his condition. Gritting his teeth, he limped his way out of the study. He had found his phone, but not his clothes. Instead of wasting time looking for his own clothes, Chrissy grabbed any pair of Nathaniel’s pants he could find, put them on, and headed outside. That arrogant man surely never imagined that Chrissy would dare walk out of his house on his own. That must be why he had left him so free.
Should I be grateful that he didn’t treat me like a dog again?
Scoffing inwardly, he walked straight toward the parking lot. Inside Nathaniel’s private parking area, luxury cars he had only heard of in name were lined up. Chrissy climbed into the Lamborghini parked in the nearest spot and scanned the surroundings. As expected, the keys were just lying around inside the car.
Of course they were. A thief skilled enough to get in here would find it much easier to rob a bank or a museum.
Suddenly, he remembered how he had almost ruined his life after damaging Nathaniel’s Jaguar. This would serve as a lesson to that man that he shouldn’t just let anyone into his house to put them through ‘dog training.’ Thinking this, he started the engine. And finally, Chrissy escaped from Nathaniel Miller’s home ground.
And now. Having realized that Nathaniel had told him an absurd lie, Chrissy concluded that his departure in a Lamborghini was simply the man’s karma, and then he spoke.
“I need the case files for Anthony Smith. Could you bring them all to me?”
