That was everything I had learned, and everything I knew about Gammas.
“Miller’s bodyguards are all Gammas.”
Ally said nonchalantly, as if resolving my question. I asked jokingly, “Didn’t you think they might be Betas?”
She replied with a deflated voice, as if forced to.
“Well, judging by your looks, I thought you’d be an Alpha or an Omega. It’s really rare for a Beta to be as handsome as you… Of course, I did consider the possibility that you were a Beta.”
Ally soon frowned.
“I never thought you’d be gay.”
Ahem, I coughed and changed the subject.
“Is there a reason why Miller’s bodyguards are all Gammas?”
I deliberately omitted the honorific, but Ally answered without much interest.
“It’s common for Dominant Alphas. They’d be in trouble if their Pheromones caused an Omega to transform or go into heat. It’s a hindrance to their work. We’re a perfect fit in that regard.”
It was a plausible reason. She continued.
“It’s not like Gammas can block a Dominant Alpha’s Pheromones one hundred percent perfectly. If a Dominant Alpha deliberately releases Pheromones, there’s nothing we can do.”
“Do Gammas transform?”
As a Beta, I didn’t have many opportunities to hear about other types. Moreover, information about Gammas was nowhere to be found. I only knew that, unlike other types, Gammas were determined from birth. I asked out of curiosity, but Ally answered readily without seeming particularly displeased.
“Yes, we do transform, though it’s rare. It’s not like we transform because we’re affected by a Dominant Alpha releasing Pheromones. Most of the time, it just ends with us feeling the Pheromones… But if we’re unlucky enough to transform, it’s really troublesome. Even if you Betas transform, you only become Omegas, but we either die or our lifespan is halved. Even if we’re lucky enough to survive, we mostly die if we give birth. There are very few people who survive even in that case, but it’s almost a miracle. Besides, they say we become so weakened that we can’t even get out of bed and just lie there for years before dying, it’s the worst.”
She shook her head and added in an indifferent tone.
“You Betas rarely transform after you turn twenty, but Gammas have a strong resistance to Pheromones, but we’re always at risk of transforming for the rest of our lives.”
Ally nonchalantly inhaled the cigarette smoke.
“It really sucks, doesn’t it?”
To her cynical question, I replied casually.
“It would suck more to be hit on by a gay man.”
At those words, Ally burst out laughing. Her soft brown eyes sparkled prettily. I was a little sorry that I wasn’t heterosexual.
“How’s your eye?”
At Ally’s question, I realized that I had forgotten about the pain in my eye for a moment. When I slowly took my hand away, there was still a burning sensation, but it wasn’t as painful as before. I blinked a few times, but unfortunately, my vision was still not clear.
“I won’t be able to drive for a while anyway.”
At her words, I finally remembered.
“Did that man really try to burn my eye? With a cigarette?”
Ally asked back, puzzled.
“Why do you think there’s no way he would?”
I was speechless. As I blinked blankly, Ally threw the shortened cigarette on the floor and took out a new one.
“Still, it’s rare for them to do that in public places, what happened?”
The words ‘public places’ particularly caught my ear. So, it was something that happened frequently in private?
“Well, he just suddenly cut in… When I said you weren’t in the wrong either, he suddenly started choking me.”
“You said that to Miller?”
She screamed in a flustered voice. She seemed almost frightened. Unable to tell whether she was afraid of Nathaniel Miller or something else, I nodded. Ally asked again with a pale face.
“You didn’t happen to glare at him, did you?”
I didn’t answer, but she sighed and shook her head.
“You should be grateful. If we hadn’t arrived at the right time and stopped him…”
Ally made the sign of the cross as if horrified. Seeing that, I wondered if what she was afraid of wasn’t Nathaniel Miller, but what he ‘might have done’. Suddenly, a malicious curiosity arose.
“What would have happened if you hadn’t?”
Ally looked at me with a pathetic expression. I immediately realized that I had asked a stupid and obvious question.
“At the very least, you would have died or gone blind. Isn’t that obvious?”
Her reaction made me think about many things.
“Has he ever burned someone else’s eyes before?”
She didn’t answer. I asked again.
“Has he ever killed anyone?”
Ally was still silent. But I felt like I knew all the answers.
But how could he walk around so confidently?
The answer was simple. Because he was an Alpha. And a Dominant Alpha, the best of his bloodline.
Alphas are not punished for any crime they commit. Even if they kill someone.
Just like my own father did.
It was as if I faintly heard a gunshot in my ear.

Fortunately, the burning sensation in my eye had disappeared by the next morning. However, a faint throbbing pain remained, and on top of that, I felt an unpleasant, gritty sensation every time I closed and opened my eyes due to lack of sleep.
Thanks to taking a taxi to work, I was able to close my eyes and rest in the car. I decided that I should buy eye drops when I went out for lunch.
“You don’t look good, what happened?”
As soon as Doug met me in the hallway, he asked in surprise, and I stared blankly at his face. Even though I was exhausted, I had scrubbed my whole body, especially my neck and hands. As a result, my neck and hands were red and swollen when I woke up, my eyes were stinging, and my face was puffy.
“Your handsome face is ruined.”
Doug clicked his tongue and lightly tapped my cheek. I lightly turned my head to avoid his hand and pressed the button on the vending machine to get a cola.
“Is the preparation going well?”
Doug asked as he followed behind, inserting a bill and pressing the button. I pressed my tired eyes and nodded briefly. As I pushed the carbonation into my parched throat, Doug asked as he opened his can.
“There’s the mayor’s birthday party this time, are you going?”
“Where would I find the time?”
The trial date was fast approaching. I had to meet with the witness and confirm their testimony one more time, and there were many things to review, such as evidence and paperwork. Doug chuckled and said, “Take it easy,” before leaving. I slowly sipped my cola and thought about what I had to do. My head was foggy, probably because I hadn’t slept.
