Prologue
“Have you ever thought about how unfair it is?”
Vivid purple eyes traced the reflection in the mirror. The freshly dyed hair had turned a common brown, exactly as intended, and was frizzy, devoid of any luster. The dye was so seamless that not a single trace of the brilliant golden threads remained.
Chaika, tracing his hair—which had become dull rather than just ordinary—with satisfied eyes, looked away from the mirror and turned around. He asked again, looking toward Andre, who was buried deep in the sofa smoking opium.
“I asked if you’ve ever thought it was unfair.”
“What now?”
“The fact that Alphas enjoy everything as rulers, while Omegas are treated like livestock needed only for breeding, even though both carry on the lineage through equally abnormal reproduction. Alphas buy and sell Omegas like breeding mares. And yet, they can’t even have proper children without an Omega.”
A faint laugh leaked from Andre’s lips along with the opium smoke. The twist of his mouth and the look in his eyes answered: Here he goes again.
“Whether it’s the Emperor, a King, or high nobility, you can’t even inherit a title if you aren’t an Alpha. And Alphas can never have an Alpha child unless it’s with an Omega. Even if they have children through dozens or hundreds of Betas, only useless Betas are born. In the end, they scramble to gather Omegas with desperate eyes just to get an heir to inherit the title and the estate. They lure them with sweet words and pheromones, rape them, or sometimes buy them like livestock; then, once a child is born, if it’s an Omega, they sell it off expensively for a political marriage or pass it around like a whore, while giving everything to the Alpha.”
Chaika irritably brushed back his dull brown hair and snatched the opium pipe from Andre’s mouth, taking a drag. Despite it being a common gesture, completely oblivious to the gaze of others, a strange sensuality clung to his every movement. It was, without a doubt, a characteristic unique to Omegas.
“When God created Alphas and Omegas, He surely made them to be pairs. Why is it that Alphas have everything and rule, while Omegas are stripped of everything and used and exploited like livestock? Don’t you think that’s unfair?”
“I believe I told you not to touch my things if you don’t want to die.”
Instead of succumbing to the Omega’s pheromones, which would have left most men spellbound in an instant, Andre took back his opium pipe and put it to his lips. Chaika, who had been robbed of the pipe after only one puff, snorted while looking at Andre with his purple eyes.
“That ridiculous possessiveness. I guess you’re an Alpha after all; you can’t help it.”
A deep, unmistakable sense of loathing clung to his accusing voice. Unbothered by the accusation and hatred directed at him, Andre tapped the opium pipe against the ashtray to clear it.
Meanwhile, Chaika walked to the window and fixed his gaze on the grand, beautiful castle far in the distance. On the flag fluttering high in the sky, the crest of the ruler of the vast estate, Duke Castilla, was clearly embroidered.
“Hey, Chaika.”
Andre called out, setting the opium pipe on the table and standing up.
“It really is unfair.”
Chaika, staring at the castle beyond the window, murmured with his red lips parting. Then, digging his nails into the forearm of Andre, who stood beside him, he asked.
“How much did you say I could get?”
“If it’s the child of Duke Castilla, one of the few Dominant Alphas on the continent—and if that child is an Alpha—the price is whatever you ask. If you sell well, you could buy a castle in a prosperous estate and live in luxury for the rest of your life.”
While Omegas were the primary trade in the black market, Alphas were occasionally traded. As Chaika said, the ruling class of the continent consisted exclusively of Alphas, and in most countries, it was the law that titles and estates of high nobility, Count and above, could only be inherited by an Alpha. Because of this, families that failed to produce an Alpha heir would sometimes secretly buy an Alpha child from the black market to maintain their lineage.
A satisfied smile spread across Chaika’s lips.
“I’ll conceive an Alpha using the seed of a noble ruler and sell it for the highest price. If I give birth to just a couple of Alphas using a Dominant Alpha’s seed and sell them, I could easily buy an entire country. Don’t you agree?”
“You’re vicious.”
Andre clicked his tongue. Chaika’s purple eyes sparkled as if he had received a compliment.
“Exactly, Andre. Coldness, cruelty, heartlessness, selfishness, ruthlessness. The reason Omegas live exploited is because they lack those things. But I’m different. I have them. Is there a law that says only Alphas can exploit Omegas? Just as those bastards use reproduction as a means to solidify their rule and possession, I will use reproduction as my weapon.”
“Because it’s you, I’ll warn you one more time, Chaika. That’s just bravado because you haven’t carried a child yet. Once an Omega conceives, maternal instinct kicks in, and instead of selling the child, they’ll throw their own lives away to protect it. Just as our mother did.”
‘Just as our mother did.’
At Andre’s final addition, Chaika’s pale face distorted hideously. An even more twisted sneer appeared on his twisted lips.
Maternal instinct. That was the shackle Omegas were born with. A maternal instinct as intense as the urge to breed. Alphas used that instinct to exploit, rule, and possess them even further.
“I’m different. I will be different.”
Chaika murmured repeatedly, as if making a vow.
“We’ll see about that,” Andre said with a face mixed with ridicule. Instead of arguing or getting angry at Andre’s mockery, Chaika curled his lips into a smirk.
“Yeah. Just watch. I’ll do it. I’ll become the most vicious human to ever exist.”
His beautiful purple eyes, filled with venom, fixed once more on the distant castle. Duke Castilla, known as the strongest Alpha on the continent excluding the Emperor and the Crown Prince. A man who, as the Emperor’s younger brother, proudly held a high rank in the line of succession. An Alpha who, uniquely, loathed Omegas so much that he wouldn’t even lay a finger on one. Because of that, he was the owner of the seed that could fetch the highest price on the black market. He was Chaika’s target.
Knock. Knock.
Someone knocked on the door. It was the signal that time was up.
“Let’s get going. Are you ready to be sold, brother?”
Andre asked, placing a hand on Chaika’s shoulder. Chaika nodded with a crooked smile.
